To commemorate the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha, a grand ritual called “Bathing the Buddha” is held by Buddhists on the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar each year. Besides commemorating the birth of the Buddha, the ritual is meant to urge people to purify their minds and to provide people with an opportunity, through the meritorious action of bathing the Buddha, to help releasing the souls of their parents of the past seven generations, their relatives who are in distress, and those who are in the six realms of Samsara from the sea of suffering.
