CHAO LI – FIX YOU NO. 23
3 x 30 x 33cm
Despite his realistic wood carvings being remarkably simple in nature, they are imbued with his conflicting thoughts and feelings about himself and the world. Li liberates the wood, as a medium, in his avant-garde sculptures, carved from a single piece of wood. His works offer a strong visual impact in the smooth finish, life-like water stains, and the meticulously carved surface that is made to appear like thick layers of tape, which the artist then varnished. These intensely realistic effects, in turn, invariably lead viewers to believe as if these protrusions on the surface were indeed real. The three works presented at auction are taken from the series ‘Fix You’, the artist having carved into the wood an imitation of layers of tape in different arrangements. His remarkable skill as a wood carver is best exemplified in the uneven folds of the tape protruding along the surface, thus giving a sense of three-dimensionality to each work.
As the teacher Gao Meng from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts believes, Chao Li maintains a close relationship with nature through his wooden sculptures and, most importantly, has painstakingly created a false reality that appears almost life-like. Born in Guangzhou, China, Chao Li completed his bachelor’s at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts before becoming a teacher at its affiliated high school. His works have been showcased in many solo and group exhibitions across China, Chile, Denmark, Italy, Germany, and Turkey. In recent years, he has participated to various international sculpture competitions and his works are being held at the Guangdong Museum of Art and in various private collections.
